The 34 talented athletes who represent the Indiana University Crimson All Girl Team have just one week before they take that mat at the 2017 UCA & UDA College Cheerleading and Dance Team National Championship in Orlando, Florida, on Jan. 14-15 in the hopes of reclaiming their title.

Head coach Julie Horine explained that she has a fairly young team this season, with only three seniors and a large freshman class of 15 on the team.

They are told all the time that the past of this program is what got them here," Assistant Head Coach Tony Nash said. "They must leave their own unique mark.

I can't believe that this is already the last time that I get the opportunity to put on an Indiana uniform and compete against great programs," senior Miata Walker said. "However, I am happy that I have such a hardworking, talented, and fun group of girls by my side to represent the best school one last time.

To be a champion, you must practice like one

Indiana began nationals prep in November. Once the Hoosiers are done with finals, they start two-a-day practices with a short break over Christmas before they come back and continue the grind.

Our practice is very structured with the way we warm up," Nash said. "We have the same warm-up for every practice.
IU starts with a dynamic stretching warm-up. Then the Hoosiers mark the routine two times. They warm up different skills throughout those marks to get them ready to start practice.

What to watch for this year:

One thing that sets us apart is the tempo of our routine," Horine said. "We like to do fast paced with difficult skills to maximize the amount skills we could showcase. We concentrate on making difficult skill look easy.

I'm feeling really great about nationals this year," senior Kelsey Werling said. "Morale is high, and we're really excited to compete a routine with such high-level skills. This routine is full of surprises that will definitely keep everyone on the edge of their seats.

"We expect to go and perform a competitive routine that hits, that is what we control," Horine said. "Our routine style has changed from what we have traditionally done in the past. We went with more upbeat choreography to add to the entertainment factor. Our big focus is on us. We don't worry about other teams since we know that is out of our hands and we can only control what we do."

In honor of the team competing for their fifth national championship, the squad is using the hashtag #hoo5iers.
