Leading a team of peers isn't easy, but two of the senior captains at Bastrop High are up for the challenge!

Marlayna Chalmers is a senior captain on the Bastrop varsity cheerleading team and has been training her spirit raising skills for over 12 years now. She leads by example and strives to uphold her school's traditions by staying plugged in to the community and her team's weekly activities. We asked about her cheer team's role within the student body and school spirit was the core principle.

The role of a cheerleader in the school is to bring the students together by using school spirit and hosting fun activities. It's also their job to set the example of how people should act in the school and be true leaders.
Leadership is a great quality to inspire in others, and Chalmers does just that with not only her words, but leading by example.

"Being a good leader means to be independent but also lead people in the right direction… with not only your words but your actions. I don't think it means that you're above anyone else, instead you need to set the example," she explained.

After graduation, Chalmers plans to attend Texas State to finish her basics, and she's already ahead of the game with one year of ACC under her belt. Her ultimate goal is to earn her masters to become a nurse practitioner, and with the motivation and leadership we've seen throughout her cheerleading career anything is possible!

DaSheanna Shaw is also a senior captain at Bastrop High and has many years of experience leading a crowd on the sidelines. She's a role model and excellent leader for her team and fellow students.

She carries on the importance of tradition at her school by passing along the unique activities and school spirit demonstrated by the cheerleaders who came before her. We asked Shaw about her leadership qualities and goals to instill traditions in her team.

A good leader is understanding... I lead my team by being someone they can always come and talk to. I work to make our team better and make sure everyone is having a fun time. I want the team to experience great times and memories in cheer like I've had throughout the year.
When Shaw graduates later this year, she plans to attend Texas and study biochemistry. Shaw's spirit is something you can feel a mile away, and no goal is out of reach for this Bastrop cheerleader.

Good luck to you captains; a bright future is ahead for you both!
