Tips To Stay Healthy While Training In Winter Weather
Winter weather means cheerleading competition season is in full swing, but unfortunately that means the cold and flu season is too. Cheerleading outside or running from the car to the gym can present some cold weather challenges that can keep an athlete off mat. Here are some helpful tips to keep you healthy despite running through the snow!

1. Wear hats and/or ear muffs.

Most of your body heat is lost through the top of your head. Keep your head covered and you'll stay warm!

2. Layer your clothes.

Wear cold gear or multiple layers to prevent hypothermia. Remember you can never have too many layers, you can always shed a few layers if needed.

3. Remember that sweat and cold do not mix.

Your body cools down using sweat, but cooling down too much in the cold temperatures can lead to illness.

4. Wet hair is not good!

Wet hair outdoors cools the head and body, which can decrease the immune system. Take the time to blow dry your hair before running out the door to practice.

5. Wear proper shoes.

Boots and enclosed, non-airy shoes are ideal for the winter weather. Cheer shoes or workout shoes can allow too much air flow and get wet easily creating poor conditions to stay healthy and stay on the mat. You can always change out of your furry snow boots and into your cheer shoes once you get inside.

6. Hand and feet warmers

Cheering outside can get chilly. Placing hand warmers in gloves or feet warmers in shoes can help keep you cozy.

7. Use Sunscreen and Say No to Sunburn

Snow can reflect sun and create sunburns even though it isn't hot outside. So lather up because sunburn doesn't go well with any uniform.

8. Stay Hydrated!

Feeling cool tricks you into thinking you aren't thirsty. Keep drinking water even when you aren't thirsty to stay hydrated for optimal performance.

9. Be prepared and pack extra clothes.

Bring extra socks in case your feet get wet or extra layers in case the temperature drops.
