STUNT is the up and coming sport version of cheerleading that removes the crowd-leading element and focuses solely on the technical and athletic components. A STUNT competition has four different quarters including partner stunts, pyramids, basket tosses, jumps and tumbling.
The fast-paced, high-energy games keep the teams and the crowd on the edge of their seat throughout the full four quarters. No need to wait around for awards to find out how you did, a scoreboard is used to show immediate results during the event.
The first three quarters of the game are made up of four rounds. The first quarter is the crowd favorite partner stunts. Teams go head to head performing the same routine. The team with the best performance each round earns a point. Winning a round earns you the possession to choose which routine will be performed next. There are six routines to choose from.
The second quarter involves pyramids and basket tosses. Judges are scoring on a variety of elements including synchronization and technique. Concluding the second quarter there is an ten-minute break for the athletes to rest and prepare for the second half of the game.
In the third quarter teams must perform jumps and tumbling. If a tie is called during a round, both teams will receive a point.
Saving the most exciting round for last, in the fourth quarter teams perform full routines including all skills done in the previous rounds. The opposing teams battle it out in three rounds of competition where each element of their routines is scored separately. In a fourth quarter round, a team can earn from 0 to 3 points. A point for stunt building, jumps and tumbling, and pyramids and tosses. With a total of six points up for grabs, the fourth quarter can be a major chance for teams to turn the lead around.
Six colleges participated in the STUNT games at the USA Spirit Nationals and Collegiate Championships held in Anaheim, California. Take a look at the full list of results from Saturday's STUNT games here!
