Climbing The Ladder Together: Farragut Spirit Squad

The 2018 UDA National Dance Team Championship will take place in Orlando, Florida, February 2-4 beginning at 9 AM ET. From all star to school dance, this is a must-watch event for any dance fan!

Both Farragut Middle and High School have attended the championship for years, and they're back and ready to make this season their best yet.

For the two teams from Farragut, NDTC is more than just an event. The squads love everything about the atmosphere of the competition and the energy brought by other teams from across the country.

Farragut High School

For the past few years, Farragut High has only been a leap away from receiving a national title. In 2017, the team placed top five in both the Small Varsity Jazz and Pom divisions.

“For our high school, one of our major strengths is our team bond," Farragut coach Adonia Adams said. "We have six seniors, two juniors, two sophomores, and one freshman. Most of these girls also danced together in middle school, including together on the national champion middle school team.”

The high school team will be competing in both Small Varsity Jazz and Small Varsity Pom this weekend in Orlando. The team's motto for this season is “I Can And I Will.” Coach Adams says this motto helps them remember that they are capable of things they never thought they could accomplish!

“For our high school Jazz routine, I think we really stand out when the chorus builds,” Adams said. “Our choreographer did an outstanding job of creating movements and dynamics that really let you feel the words of our song.”

“For our high school Pom routine we decided to step outside our normal comfort zone and try something new this year by using different color poms to create new visuals we’ve never had before," Adams explained. “Our Pom choreographer really went above and beyond this year to create a routine that is both entertaining and is tailored to show off our skill set.”

Farragut Middle School

Farragut Middle School never has a problem keeping up with the competition at the UDA National Dance Team Championship. In 2013, the team was named national champions after performing a flawless routine in the Junior High Jazz division. Since their championship win, Farragut Middle has brought home two second- and one third-place finish.

“Our team strength for our Middle School is the entire team’s determination to not settle for anything less than their best."

Farragut Middle School will compete in both the Junior High Jazz and Junior High Pom divisions this weekend. Their team motto this year is “Together We Can.” Coach Adams says this motto helps them remember that they can reach new heights by staying united and wanting what is best for their team.

Coach Adams says the hardest skill for the middle school team to master in their routines is turning together in sync.

“As a middle school team, we set the goal to have difficult team turn sequences in both routines," she said.

In both of FMS's routines, every single athlete has put in the hard work that it takes to execute elite skills. Coach Adams is proud of their hard work and thinks these difficult skills will help them stand out from others in the Junior High divisions.

Coach Adams takes pride in the Farragut dance program, as she is a Farragut dance alumna as well. This is her 10th year coaching FHS and her 13th coaching FMS.

“I take pride in seeing just how far our program has come over the years. My number one goal is to see that my dancers, both individually and as a team, succeed.”

Farragut has created a strong program from the inside out over the past few years and has been biting at the ankles of a national title! Will the high school bring the performance aspect they have been working for? And will the middle school find that synchronization they need to send them to the top?
