Hungry? Peak Athletics Has Something Cooking!

Just when you thought that a Mini division couldn’t get any cuter, the Mini Poms from Colorado’s Peak Athletics showed up to serve some cuteness on a teal platter.

From the moment they walked on the stage, the crowd knew they were in for a sweet treat! Rocking custom fit chef coats and oversized chef hats (complete with the word “chef” all blinged out), it’s obvious that this team is cooking up some serious greatness this season.

When searching for a theme for a mini team, Peak Athletics owner, Nicole Landrum, made it clear that the choice is crucial to their success. “With minis, their personalities can definitely outshine their choreography or skill set, so it’s important to choose a dynamic theme.” That has never more obvious than when the music breaks down, the voiceover “I love cookies sooooo much” booms over the speakers in a comical voice, and the girls take the choreography to a whole new level of sass.  The Minis take that moment, run with it, and serve up a four-course dinner of performativity.

With all of the over the top personalities of the athletes shining through in the routine, it’s important to make sure the costumes can reach the same level.

The inspiration for the theme, and specifically the costumes, came from Peak dance director, Steven Thornton. Step one was creating something unique. “We had to think, what’s something we haven’t done and would be cute and memorable?” Thornton reminisced.

Sometimes a theme emerges before a costume, but this was an instance in which the costume actually inspired the theme. This season, the inspiration came from the character the Swedish Chef from Sesame Street. Thornton said that he “started by creating the Chef costume, and then the theme around the costume. After that, we put the sound effects in the music to match, and it all came together”.  It’s a process that takes a lot of attention to detail and patience.

When it’s all done, and the final product hits the stage, the level of creativity and talent to pull the whole thing off is genuinely impressive.

The costumes, designed and created by Thornton, are so well done, that they could easily steal the show. But, the Mini Poms most certainly do not let that happen. It was clear that the dancers understand their theme, and have excellent inherent musicality. While they were performing, you could hear the entire crowd get into the performance more and more as the theme came full circle through music, choreography, and of course, the costumes. However, there was obviously even more to the equation than all of that.

“This team ended their season last year, and immediately wanted to pick up where they left off. They’ve grown up in the studio, a lot of them, since they were like two and a half."

Keeping the group together has paid off in dividends, as the Mini Poms were the talk of the arena throughout the day at the UCA & UDA Mile High Championship.

One thing is certain, as long as this team keeps cooking together, they’re sure to keep everyone coming back for more. Make sure you make a reservation to catch this performance this season!
