Charlotte Allstars Cheerleading out of Matthews, North Carolina has been a part of the all star world for thirty years! The program brought eight teams to the 2019 All Star Challenge: Battle Under The Big Top this weekend in Atlanta, Georgia.

Gym owners, Julie Obrien and Jenn Brubaker opened the gym in 1989 and has been driven ever since. They started out in gymnastics and quickly fell in love with cheerleading! 

“Kevin [Jenn Brubaker’s husband] was a cheerleader in college and he went to NCA All Star Nationals and he saw an all star team exhibition,” said owner Julie Obrien. “We were working at a gymnastics school and he was working with older girls on their tumbling and he thought he could really do something with them and start an all star team.”

Obrien and Brubaker have been dedicated to Charlotte Allstars for thirty years, and it’s something about the kids that they get to impact that keeps them around year after year.

“For me, and I think Kevin too, we just love working with the kids and helping them become better adults,” said Obrien. “I love the team aspect of the sport. It’s learning how to work together and growing with the kids that we love.”

Charlotte Allstars Cheerleading has been attending All Star Challenge: Battle Under The Big Top on and off for many of years, and they’re back this season for the first time in a while!

The program has an exciting season ahead of them and the gym owners and coaches are excited to see their athletes grown.

“For most of our teams this is their second year at this level, so we’re really excited about their progress." said Obrien. "Seeing the kids realize their potential and showing that on the floor is what we’re looking forward to the most about this season.”

The teams from Charlotte All Stars Cheerleading have had a strong Day 1 at the 2019 All Star Challenge: Battle Under The Big Top, but be sure to watch all eight teams take the stage for Day 2 tomorrow!
