Day 1 of competition is done here at PAC Battle of Champions in Calgary, and the performances have been electrifying. There has been no shortage of excellent cheerleading, and the teams have come to fight for the top spots.

Gymniks All Star Cheer turned in one of the best performances of the day in the Level 2 Senior Small division, and they were rewarded with one of the top scores across all divisions.

Varsity TV caught up with program coordinator, Lindsay Morrison, to find out more about this team.

In their tenth year as a program, Gymniks, out of Grand Prairie, Canada, is making big moves at the competition here in Calgary. They took a commanding lead with their team Ambush in the Level 2 Senior Small A division and did so with a bold routine that was executed extremely well.

“This group of athletes is so committed and passionate about cheer. They live and breathe it. They’re the oldest athletes in our program and act as amazing role models in our program.”

She also noted that the athletes of Ambush take an active role in molding the younger athletes in the program. She said that many of the girls are taking roles as coaches for the younger teams, leading by example and guiding the future of the program.

There was no shortage of positivity and encouragement after their Day 1 performance, and they are hoping to bring it all back again in Finals.

She said, “We were really happy with our performance today. We just want to go out tomorrow with the same attitude and have another great run!”

They have been fighting through some obstacles to get to this point, specifically losing some team numbers from the beginning of the season. None of that, however, has stopped Ambush from focusing in on being great.

“They support one another no matter what and have only become better athletes and a better team because of it,” added Morrison.

The athletes of Ambush are all best friends and are creating lifelong friendships and memories.

There is a lot on the line here this weekend, but the pressure hasn’t seemed to affect Ambush. They had one of the top scores of the entire competition on Day 1 and they have their eyes on building on that even more for Day 2. They are certainly one of the teams to watch this weekend, and we can’t wait to see what they can do.
