Frederick Douglass Makes History With Second Place Finish At NHSCC

It's championship Sunday at the 2020 UCA National High School Championship and dreams are coming true as teams leave it all out on the floor in Finals.

Varsity Division II Finals just wrapped up and the competition was full of surprises, elite skills, and some of the best routines we've ever seen at NHSCC.

In Large Varsity Division II, Frederick Douglass High School made history earning their highest placement ever at UCA. After not making it out of Prelims in 2019, the Kentucky team bounced back and worked harder than ever to finish second in the nation in 2020!

"I am more than proud of my girls. They came out here and did what they had to do and that was just hit a clean routine. I wanted them to be proud and we just made our town proud." - Coach, Alexa Wingate

When asked what this means for the future of their school, Wingate felt hopeful that Frederick Douglass could only go up.

"It means we are taking off from here. We are a third-year school and we're just ready to make a name for ourselves and I think we did that this year."

Congratulations, Frederick Douglass High School!

Most cheerleaders and dancers join a team at a young age just looking for a hobby or an afterschool activity. But after years of practicing, conditioning, long game days, and competition weekends, these athletes look back on the hours spent with their teammates and realize that cheer and dance taught them a lot more than just the skills they learned on the mat.
