The University of Michigan is known for its legendary athletic programs from their 11-time National Championship-winning football team to their six-time NCA National Championship-winning cheerleading program.

This weekend, the University of Michigan spirit program is set to compete virtually at the NCA & NDA Collegiate Cheer and Dance National Championship with the goal of adding a few more national championship titles to their storied athletic history.

For years, the Wolverines have competed in the Intermediate Large Coed division at NCA claiming championship titles in 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2019. For the first time in their program’s history, the University of Michigan will be competing in the Intermediate Small Coed division.

With the change in divisions, Assistance Cheerleading Coach Angie Salow said that fans can expect to see a lot of technical and powerful tumbling from the new and improved team.

The University of Michigan doubled down on their NCA College Nationals presence in 2018 when the NCA & NDA Game Day divisions were created and in 2019 the Wolverines claimed the Game Day Division IA Championship title!

This season, the University of Michigan has implemented Color Guard members in their routine to add yet another traditional game day element to their performance.

“The Michigan Football game day experience is unmatched both in size and pomp and circumstance. The Big House is the largest college football stadium in the nation, our marching band wows week in and week out energizing the crowd, and you never know when Tom Brady may come home for a visit!”

Salow told Varsity TV that her athletes have come to practice each day leading up to NCA with an enthusiastic attitude and ready to work.

“Many of them have been asked to step far outside of their comfort zones, and they do so without hesitation because they know it’s what the team needs to be successful,” shared Salow.

After not having the ability to compete at the championship in 2020, the University of Michigan is beyond excited to be one of the fortunate teams competing this weekend.

“We are incredibly fortunate to have an Athletic Department that supports our program and believes in our athletes,” Salow explained. “We are one of only a few programs in our conference that have even been allowed to practice, let alone compete at nationals, and that is not lost on us. Our athletes have lost so much and been asked to make countless sacrifices, so we’re most looking forward to just being able to compete and provide them with some semblance of normalcy.”

Will the University of Michigan be able to add another NCA National Championship title to their trophy case this weekend? Be sure to tune in to Varsity TV to find out and to watch all the action unfold live at the 2021 NCA & NDA Collegiate Cheer and Dance National Championship!
