Everything You Need To Know About The UCA College Game Day Divisions

The  2023 UCA & UDA College Cheerleading and Dance Team National Championship is on the horizon and the prestigious competition will kick off on Friday, January 13th with the spirited game day divisions!

2023 marks the sixth year Game Day will take place at the UCA & UDA College Cheerleading and Dance Team National Championship. Teams competing in the divisions will bring their favorite sideline traditions to the mat to display how they lead their community and fans back at home on game day.

During the UCA Game Day Championship, teams will perform their traditional school's fight song, a situational sideline, and a game day timeout. The athletes are encouraged to use signs, flags, megaphones, and poms to encourage fans to cheer along. Teams may also add a pep band or drumline into their performance to amp up the spirit!

Last year, Varsity TV caught up with Grand Canyon University to more about what it's like to represent their school and their traditions in the game day divisions.

The judges will score teams using the criteria listed on the UCA Game Day score sheet. Each team will be evaluated on a 100-point system. For more about Game Day, click here.

Fight Song

  • Should represent the traditional fight song your school has always done at games
  • Skills should be minimal and practical
  • Should start from the sideline formation

Situational Sideline

  • Situational for each team performing
  • After an offensive or defensive scenario, the squad will determine which sideline to do
  • Teams are encouraged to use spirit-raising props such as signs, poms, and/or megaphones
  • Skills should be minimal and practical

Game Day Timeout

  • Similar to a 60-second extended band chant; designed for crowd interaction and involves crowd response
  • The best time to showcase the squad’s energy, leadership, visual appeal, and connection to the crowd

Each performance is limited to three minutes and should include skills that influence fan participation. Teams of up to 30 athletes will be evaluated on their ability to lead the crowd, proper game day skill incorporations, execution of skills, motion technique, and the overall routine.
