Insider Info: 2025 GSSA Ontario Challenge

The annual schedule for the Golden State Spirt Association may be small, but it offers a mighty competitive time for All Star cheer teams in California.

The three-event slate for the 2025-2026 season features two competitions on Nov. 22 and one epic national championship in January.

Despite what might pop into your mind when you see that the first event is in Ontario, you won’t need a passport for this one, as the 2025 GSSA Ontario Challenge is being held in Ontario, California, not north of the border in Canada.

If you still can’t be at the Ontario Convention Center in person, don’t worry – all of the action will be broadcast live on Varsity TV!

The GSSA was founded in 1999 and has grown into a premier organization in the Western Region, giving top-tier events and scholarship opportunities to cheerleaders and dancers from the West Coast.

The other event taking place Nov. 22 is the GSSA San Mateo Challenge in San Mateo, California (also on Varsity TV), while the GSSA Grand Nationals is slated for Jan. 9-11, 2026.

Enjoy complete coverage of the 2025 GSSA Ontario Challenge, as standout teams from Division I and Division II go head-to-head with their sights set on obtaining points to The Varsity Cheer League and a bid to one of the prestigious end-of-season championships!

What To Know About The Ontario Convention Center

The Ontario Convention Center already is a prime spot for events of all kinds, and it’s going to get even better.

Right now, the facility offers more than 225,000 square feet of flexible space for meetings, events, convention, trade shows and more.

The groundbreaking for the venue happened in late 1995, and two years later, the $66 million property welcomed the first of what has been more than 5,000 events.

It was preceded by the opening of Ontario Mills Mall and the California Speedway, both huge draws for visitors, and it was followed by new terminals at the airport.

The convention center space is split up between a main exhibit hall (70,000 column-free square feet), a ballroom (20,000) and 24 meeting rooms (totaling 24,000 square feet).

The award-winning convention center is a short ride from the Ontario International Airport and is close to 6,700 hotel rooms.

While renovations and updates have taken place over the years, including the addition of an outdoor patio, there’s more on the horizon.

An expansion that already is underway will add another 247,000 square feet of exhibit space, easy pedestrian access, expanded parking, a new look and feel and more.

Things To Do In Ontario, California

When you think of Southern California, Ontario might not be the first city that comes to mind.

While it’s not in Canada, it was established by Canadian developers and named after their hometown, so there’s a connection.

Ontario (California) is known in the agricultural world for producing lemons, but it also is a transportation hub, home to one of the largest indoor shopping malls in the world, a college town, a great destination for sports and entertainment and very diverse in culture and food due to its Canadian background and proximity to Mexico.

The city has an indoor soccer team (Ontario Fury), a Minor League Baseball team (Inland Empire 66ers) and the AHL affiliate of the NHL’s Los Angeles Kings (Ontario Reign).

Those are just a few of the highlights. Click here to learn more about Ontario. And check out 48 facts about Ontario here

And, while you probably won’t starve or get bored in Ontario, if there’s more time available, there is so much more to see and do.

Ontario is only about 35 miles from Los Angeles/Anaheim, and that provides exponentially more opportunities for fun.

Here are just a few places to consider adding to your itinerary: Disneyland Park, Disney California Adventure, Knott’s Berry Farm, Knott’s Soak City, Universal Studios Hollywood, Six Flags Magic Mountain, LEGOLAND California and SeaWorld San Diego.

Every team that competes at a Varsity All Star event this season will be included in the Varsity Cheer League.

Team rankings are determined by the point system displayed here

At each Varsity All Star event your team completes, your team will earn points based on the assigned event and placement point value.

At the end of the season, your six best Varsity All Star event scores will be used to calculate your final rank.

In total, 92 winners will be recognized from first to third place across each region.

One champion will be crowned in each of the five regions across the six eligible divisions and two League 6 conferences. Champions will win cash and prizes!
